Sponsored Student InformationFor students taking classes for Academic creditSponsored students are students who require the University of Michigan to bill an outside sponsor. In order to prepare the sponsor's invoice, the University requires a letter of authorization from the sponsor which must list the charges the sponsor will pay (tuition, fees, etc). The University will not bill maintenance costs, living costs, room and board costs, or book purchases. The letter should also contain the complete billing address with any reference information that should be quoted on the invoice, as well as the student's name and social security number. International students who do not have a U.S. social security number should provide their full name along with any other identifying information which may be useful to distinguish them from other University students with the same name. The letter also should state the length of period authorized for billing (For example: Summer Institute, June 2 - July 25, 2008). The University will include a processing fee of $25.00 for each initial invoice sent out for the term. If there is more than one student under the same sponsor, all students may be billed on one invoice. (The sponsor must request billing of all students in the same letter of authorization and request a single invoice). The tuition and mandatory fee charges will be itemized for each student if the sponsor elects to be billed in this manner. Non-payment by a sponsor becomes the liability and responsibility of the student. Additional information required by the sponsors, such as grades, transcripts, course(s) and other miscellaneous information, must be supplied by the student. Questions about sponsor billings and authorization letters should be directed to Student Financial Operations, 2226 Student Activities Building, 515 E. Jefferson St., Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109-1316, telephone (734) 764-7447.
