Additional Training

ICPSR Summer Training Program

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) offers a Summer Program in Quantitative Methods which provides additional opportunities for participants in SRC’s Summer Institute. ICPSR’s Summer Program offers courses in research design, statistics, data analysis, and methods of research which provide a complement to the courses on survey research methods offered by the Summer Institute.

The ICPSR program offers two four-week sessions, partially overlapping with the Summer Institute. The ICPSR and the Summer Institute have different fee schedules and separate registration procedures. Individuals not registering for academic credit who wish to enroll in both the SRC Summer Institute and ICPSR courses are required to pay full fees to both programs. See the ICPSR Summer Training Program web site for the schedule of lectures and workshops.

Graduate Programs in Survey Methodology

The Summer Institute courses may be elected for graduate credit. Participants electing to take the courses for graduate credit may have those credits contribute toward a degree program in Survey Methodology.

Certificate in Survey Methodology

The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology is a graduate degree program offering PhD, MS, and Certificate degrees. The Certificate program can be completed entirely in the Summer Institute across two summers. The Certificate requires completion for credit of four courses in the Summer Institute: Introduction to Survey Research Techniques, Data Collection Methods, methods of Survey Sampling, and one elective course. Elective courses in the Summer Institute meeting Certificate requirements include Questionnaire Design; Cognition, Communication and Survey Measurement; and Multilevel Analysis of Survey Data. Since a full-time course load in the Summer Institute is 12 credits, and the Certificate credit requirement consists of 15 credits, the Certificate should be completed in two summers of study.

Participants interested in the Certificate program through Summer Institute courses must apply to the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies for admission by March 15, 2008. Certificate applicants must be currently enrolled in a post-baccalaureate degree program, or have completed a post-baccalaureate degree within the last five years. Admissions decisions are made by the faculty of the Michigan Program in Survey Methodology. Application procedures are described at the program Web site.

MS and PhD Programs

The Michigan Program in Survey Methodology also offers Masters and PhD programs of study. The program draws faculty from social, behavioral, and statistical science departments across the University. The MS degree is a 47 credit hour program that can be completed full time (20 months of study beginning in September), half time (32 months), or part time (64 months). The PhD program requires four or five years of study.
