Besangie's research is centered around healthy aging within the African American community, and the importance of social relations throughout the lifespan.  By studying the structure and quality of social relations and how they influence development, more can be understood about racial and cultural differences in physical and mental health.

She is currently doing postdoctoral work at the University of Pittsburgh.
