Groves received a PhD in sociology from the University of Michigan. From 1989-1992, he was an associate director of the U.S. Census Bureau. He is interested in the integration of social science and statistical perspectives on survey quality. Groves' current research interests involve understanding the behavioral foundations of nonresponse error in surveys, using process and observational data in surveys to implement responsive designs in surveys, and measuring total survey error to aid analysis of survey data.
