Welcome and thank you for your interest in working as a Graduate Student Instructor in the Program in Survey Methodology at the Institute for Social Research. In keeping with the GEO contract, we present here basic information about the procedures by which GSI/Grader positions are announced and assigned.
A Departmental GSI/Grader Selection Committee is charged with the responsibility of making final selections for all open GSI/Grader positions within the department. Committee members include the Director of the Program in Survey Methodology, the Director of the Summer Institute, and the Educational Programs Administrator.
Doctoral students in the Program in Survey Methodology (PSM) receive priority consideration for open GSI/Grader positions. The Department may hire students from a variety of programs across the College and University, but graduate students in (PSM) normally have priority over others. Graduate students who have previously held GSI/Grader positions in PSM courses normally receive priority consideration, as well.
In making hiring decisions, the Committee considers academic qualifications (prior college record and current academic record); competence to assist in particular courses; prior teaching performance (teaching evaluations and/or supervisor evaluations); applicants’ and faculty members’ stated teaching preferences; and levels of current and prior financial support.
Applicants must submit the following:
- Completed GSI/Grader application form (PDF)
- Cover letter outlining your interest and qualifications
- Resume or CV
- Recommendation Reports (optional) (PDF 76K)
- A transcript (unofficial copies are acceptable)
- Previous course evaluations (if available)
Please submit application materials to Jill Esau, Program in Survey Methodology, Room 4050 Institute for Social Research, 426 Thompson St., Ann Arbor, MI 48104-1248.
IMPORTANT: All required documents must be received by the PSM Office by 5pm on posting deadline for each term for equal consideration. Posting deadlines are as follows:
Summer: March 31

Information received late may eliminate your application from consideration. For more information please contact Jill Esau, either by email at michpsm@isr.umich.edu or by phone at 734-764-6595.
