Abstract
The Institute for Social Research of the University of Michigan proposes to design and carry out survey research pertaining to democracy and democratization in at least eight Arab countries. These surveys will be carried out within the framework of the Global Democracy Barometer Project. The proposed surveys will be conducted in collaboration with Arab scholars and research institutions participating in social science training and capacity building programs that the University of Michigan is carrying out in nine Arab countries. Dr. Mark Tessler coordinates these programs.
The Global Democracy Barometer Project conducts systematic and comparative surveys of attitudes and values related to politics, governance, reform, democracy, and the political actions of ordinary citizens. The project is being carried out in many countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and East Asia, but there has not been a Democracy Barometer survey in any Arab country. The directors of the Democracy Barometer Project have expressed strong interest in involving the Arab world in this initiative and have asked Dr. Tessler to assist in achieving this objective.
