Political Economy Working Papers Archive: PEWPA

This page contains links to software which will likely be of use to you in accessing and contributing to PEWPA.

Browsers

The web-based upload system for PEWPA requires at least v 2.0 (or v 4.0, even better) of Netscape Navigator/Communicator or v 4.0 of Internet Explorer.

PDF Software

PDF, Adobe Software's Portable Document Format, is the format of choice for PEWPA. It is easily generated with Adobe's Acrobat software or with the free GhostScript/GhostView programs from PostScript files. If you are printing to an HP printer, you can generate a PostScript file on an IBM-compatible computer by saving the print job to a file rather than sending it to a printer. The resulting file will have a .ps or .prn suffix.
To read the pdf papers in the site, simply download the free Acrobat Reader. If you have an old version of the program, it's best to upgrade to v 3.0 after you have installed the browser. By doing this, it will be automatically configured as a plug-in for your web browser and will then launch automatically when you click on the paper's pdf in the site.

  • Abobe Acrobat Reader: a free program for reading the pdf files in this web site (Mac & Win)
  • Abobe Acrobat: the original program to produce pdfs. You can quickly and easily generate pdfs from PostScript or other files with Acrobat and its component programs. Note that while this program is not free, many universities maintain Adobe site licenses and this program may be available for less than $40 through your university. (Mac & Win)
  • Adobe PageMaker 6.5: another non-free program, PageMaker's version 6.5 will generate pdfs from PageMaker or other text or text & graphics files. (Mac & Win)
  • Ghostscript & Ghostview: these free programs will convert Postscript files into pdfs quickly and painlessly. (Mac & Win)
